Abstract

In 1975, Ecotopia: The Notebooks and Reports of William Weston by Ernest Callenbach was published. The book writes 24 years in the future in the year 1999, where the Pacific Northwest has seceded from the United States in favor of a more nature-centric lifestyle appropriately called “Ecotopia.” Since then, the book has been influential in sustainability movements starting in the 1970s. Currently, the book serves as a pedagogical tool in courses on sustainability at the undergraduate level and beyond. Unfortunately, there are areas of the book that seem culturally amiss and passé that should be addressed. This paper, titled “Revisiting Ecotopia” begins to explore the world created by Callenbach in line with contemporary advancements and digressions.
