Since the early twentieth century, terrestrial radio has been a primary source of information and entertainment around the globe. It has survived to this day against many media outlets, including newspapers, magazines, and even television. It is with the rise of satellite radio, more specifically Sirius XM Satellite Radio, that terrestrial radio has finally met an adversary. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rise of Sirius XM and to show the negative effects they have had on the terrestrial radio industry, and in return, the communities at large that they serve. Sirius XM has such a critical impact on the terrestrial radio industry due to their national reach and audience, their wide variety of programming, and their partnership with many automotive manufacturers. It is with the understanding of these factors that this paper shows the negative impact Sirius XM has had on the terrestrial radio industry and how they will continue to change the radio industry looking into the future.
