In Madeinusa Magaly Solier plays Madeinusa, a 14 year old girl who dresses as the Virgin Mary to enact Easter Andean/Christian rituals celebrated in the fictional village of Manayaycuna. In 2001 Alejandro Toledo dressed in ceremonial Andean clothing begins the symbolic inauguration of his presidency in an event celebrated in Macchu Pichu. Ollanta Humala, the current president of Peru, has also donned a poncho in various ceremonies. As we move forward at a vertiginous speed we are still connected to the past through our adornments, our traditional dresses, as we make “the body the site of resistance” (John Fiske) and cultural survival.
