Abstract:
The paper “Appalshop Documentaries as Media Activism: A Case Study” evaluates and explores the Eastern Kentucky media outfit’s activist documentaries and business model. Using filmmaker and administrator interviews, analyzing the films, and researching Appalshop’s history, its effectiveness in social justice and change is assessed.

Becky Banks holds an M.A. in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University (2013) and a B.A. in Journalism from Webster University (2002). She teaches at Penn State Brandywine and Delaware County Community College in addition to working as a freelance writer.
Her research interests include the influence of media representation on place and documentaries as a democratic tool.
