The Penn Treaty in Art, Film & Public History

Abstract: 

This presentation is about the seventeenth century treaty between William Penn and the Lenape Indians as found in popular and American culture. I explore depictions and commemorations of this event in light of present day Quaker and Lenape perspectives. My examination includes Benjamin West’s painting Penn’s Treaty with the Indians, the John Wayne film Angel and the Badman, the US Capitol rotunda and Penn Treaty Park in Philadelphia.
