The Colorful History of Golf in Atlantic City

Area:
Presenter:
Glenn Gerstner (St. John's University)
Presentation type:
Paper
Abstract:

According to Golfweek magazine, the Atlantic City area currently boasts six of the ten best public golf courses in New Jersey. Golf has been part of the fabric of Atlantic City long before gambling was legalized in 1978; the Atlantic City Country Club (ACCC) and the Seaview Country Club (now the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club) opened in 1898 and 1915 respectively. Not surprisingly, the history of golf in Atlantic City has a colorful history, with stories of Al Capone and Nucky Johnson hiding out at the ACCC when the “heat was on.” The purpose of this presentation will be to examine the history of golf in Atlantic City from its beginnings at the turn of the 20th century, the golden age of the 1930s and 1940s, the demise of many clubs in the 1960s and 1970s, and its more recent return to glory.

Scheduled on:
Friday, November 4, 9:30 am to 10:45 am
