Mystery Mausoleums

Presenter:
Susan Olsen (Woodlawn Cemetery)
Presentation type:
Paper
Abstract:

The memorial firm of C.E. Tayntor & Company designed and built some of the most significant mausolea in the New York City area. This paper will focus on their clients, their relationship with Tiffany studios and their eventual merger with the Davis monument company. Tayntor, like many companies building large scale monuments in the late nineteenth century transitioned from the use of Westerly Granite to Barre Granite and integrated colored stone from various quarries into their high end constructions. This paper is part of a continuing series that focuses on the mausolea of The Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Woodlawn is a National Historic Landmark with the “largest and finest collection of funeral art in the nation.” Woodlawn has 1318 private family mausoleums, designed and constructed by some of the nations most renowned architects and monument firms.

Scheduled on:
Thursday, November 3, 11:00 am to 12:15 pm
