Improv Artivism: Improvisation and Activism for Social Change

Abstract: 

Improvisation is spontaneous inventiveness to mind as inspiration. Improvisation in any life or encourage creative behavior.

Activism promotes social, political, economic reform makes improvements in society. Forms of activist writing letters to newspapers to politicians, political campaigning, economic activism boycotts or preferentially patronizing businesses, rallies, street marches, strikes, sit-ins, and hunger strikes. And improvisational theater.“improv artivism”. Artivism developed while the antiwar anti-globalization protests emerged.

Improv artivists push political agendas by comedy performance, focus on raising social, environmental awareness and activist change. improv artivists can be involved in culture jamming, counter-storytelling, observing ‘power-relationships’ outside of the traditional boundaries, street art, spoken word, protesting and activism at rallies.

In a Trump/Brexit world, improv creates more powerful and strident activists with uniquely powerful ability to observe ‘power relationships’, activist coalitions, communicate persuasive stories, create revolutionary change.

Joseph Novick

Joey’s been a political comedian, camp-counselor, editorial-director, attorney, busboy, professional speaker, child-actor and elected-official. But not necessarily in that order.

As an improv actor, he’s appeared with Robin Williams at the Comic Strip, and studied with famed ‘Second City’ improvisation director, Del Close.

He’s appeared at Catch A Rising Star, Comedy Zone, Dangerfield’s and scores of comedy venues across the country. He’s opened for Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Chris Rock, Robert Klein and Rosie O’Donnell.
