Photography's Thereness

Saturday, November 10, 1:15 pm to 2:30 pm (Caswell)

The papers in this panel explore the power of photography to assert identity and presence in the face of forces that wish to silence or make absent those depicted. In doing so, they consider the selfies of migrants, the physical photographic portrait in the digital age, and LIFE magazine’s quashing of positive images of the Black Panthers.

Session chairs

Kim Sels (Towson University)
Janna Eggebeen (Independent scholar)
