Georgia Marble Company became a central source of white marble in competition with the northern Vermont Marble. But in fact, Vermont marble men stretched their hand into the ownership of this southern company, challenging assumptions of defiant distinctions of character between post Civil War North and South companies.

Anne Tait is an Associate Professor of Art at Roger Williams University in the School of Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation. Her recent artwork straddles her backgrounds in art and historic preservation and is inspired by the imagery used on the marble headstone designs of the 19th century.
