Travel Channel: Singlehandedly Delegitimizing the Paranormal Field

Presenter:
Lesia Miller Schnur (Kennesaw State University)
Presentation type:
Paper
Abstract:

On June 4, Travel Channel renewed the Freshman paranormal TV series Paranormal Caught on Camera for a second season. The season one finale was scheduled to air on June 9. Surely the announcement was meant to boost viewership. Instead, the paranormal community let out a collective moan. Travel Channel’s new 2019 paranormal programming features unvetted amateur videos with “experts” proclaiming the authenticity without conducting any research or investigations. Because of this reckless programming, Travel Channel delegitimizes the paranormal field as science instead embracing the role of faked entertainment.

The renewal press release claims the series “showcases the most amazing, eye-opening and downright scary paranormal videos from around the world, as a panel of experts and specialists breaks down the footage and analyzes what exactly the eyewitnesses captured.” The problem is…the items profiled on the show are re-canned stories that were profiled on other shows and the “experts” barely break a sweat espousing vague comments before declaring the segment the most definitive evidence ever seen.

By posting stories that were already debunked kills any credibility Travel Channel had before production began. Further, Travel Channel is exaggerating viewership casting blows to other credible TC programs.

Paranormal Caught on Camera joins other subpar shows in 2019, including Ghost Bait, Haunted Hospitals, and Portals to Hell. This paper will breakdown the debunked events while showcasing the importance of research.

Scheduled on:
Thursday, November 7, 1:45 pm to 3:00 pm
